On the one hand, there’s this mentality that “it’s not personal, it’s business.” It’s tempting to think that it’s possible to divorce yourself from emotions while getting business done.
Unfortunately, there are a few problems with that approach. For one, you’re a human being. You can’t avoid emotions.
Second, emotions aren’t always a bad thing in business. They can offer you valuable information that can help inform decisions and help you learn and grow.
Emotions become problematic when they rule your decisions.
So rather than attempting to shut off your emotions, I propose that your real work is to know and understand them.
The first step? Get curious.
When you approach yourself with a sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness, it becomes possible to get to know and observe these emotions and their effects. These are vital steps to keeping emotions in check.
